Tethering Android on Ubuntu

Many of Linux users and especially Ubuntu users can’t find any clear information on how to tether an Android based device and Ubuntu. There are sources that would suggest you install a third-party application to do it.

After following several instruction I came across online, I figured it out myself and its actually pretty simple to do. I am using Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, which has Android 2.3.3. So these instructions are tested on this version and would surely work for later versions, but you’ll have to check to see if it works for previous versions. I am also using Ubuntu 11.04 natty, so the way may differ for previous versions.

First on Ubuntu, click on the connection icon and click preferences. Then select the mobile broadband tab and select add, then simply fill in all the information and add it, then close the dialog box.

Now go to Android, click Menu>Settings>Wireless & Network Settings and click Tethering & portable hotspot. Make sure you android is connected to you computer and then check USB tethering. Once enabled a blue Android icon will appear in the notification bar and the connection you created on Ubuntu will appear in the connections menu. Just click it and you’re connected to the internet through your mobile phone.
